Artists’ International Exchange Program
TCG Nordica cooperates with ArtsNordica and other organisations to facilitate opportunities for writers, representatives of fine arts and performing artists to take part in exchange programmes through which they acquaint themselves with a culture different to their own. This exposure leads to new understanding and inspiration in the artist’s life and work. Arts and Culture Exchange Projects Initiated by TCG Nordica 1999-2010 (coming later).
Kunming Culture Forum
TCG Nordica offers a Culture Forum for young people majoring in performing arts, fine arts and English. Through this arena, participants have an opportunity to grow in their language and cross cultural skills as they work together with people of many different cultures and backgrounds. Application forms are available at the TCG Nordica office.
Scandinavian School Exchange
Scandinavian students from our partnering institutions come to TCG Nordica as a part of their education in programmes of various lengths. These students are vital members of TCG Nordica’s regular activities and cultural exchanges. Our first Scandinavian exchange started in 1999 with the Swedish Folk High School and its “Culture Course in China”.
Culture Course with Hyllie Park Folkhögskola
Hyllie Park Folkhögskola (College) in the city of Malmo, SkÃ¥ne province, is situated in the most southern part of Sweden, just next to Copenhagen over the border in Denmark. The region is one of Sweden’s most expansive, boasting a rich multicultural environment. Hyllie Park itself has also expanded greatly since starting in 1997, always mirroring the society in general with its international mix of staff and students.
What is Folkhögskola?
The ‘folkhögskola’ or ‘Folk College’ plays an important role in the Swedish adult education system. Each ‘folkhögskola’ designs its own programmes. Some are designed to give eligibility for further university studies, whereas others simply give the student a chance to learn about a specific area of interest. Both courses result in a ‘Folkhögskola’ diploma. For Swedish citizens it is possible to get financial study support from the Swedish Government for ‘folkhögskola’ education. The Folk Colleges in Skåne province cooperates closely with the universities in the region.
Hyllie Park Folk College’s Courses and Aims
Hyllie Park Folkhögskola has developed courses in three major areas: General Courses (leading on to further studies), Profile Courses and special education commissioned by the city of Malmo. For all programmes, the aim is to raise the students’ quality of life through the interplay of theoretical studies, creative activities, cultural variety and an ongoing discussion about society and life in general.
Culture Course in China
One of our Profile Courses is the “Culture Course in China”, located in Kunming in the beautiful Yunnan province, south China. It has been running since 2002 in close cooperation with the Scandinavian-Chinese culture centre TCG Nordica.
The Culture Course in China’s students leave Sweden in late August each year to spend nine months in China, where they learn more about the Chinese culture while participating in the work of TCG Nordica, as well as taking classes from Chinese and foreign teachers in a variety of interesting subjects such as Chinese Language (Conversation), China Knowledge and Culture & Creativity.
At TCG Nordica the students have a great opportunity to be fully involved in the centre and its vision “stimulating reflection on human worth as expressed in various art forms“. This involvement is seen through hands on experience in arranging both stage and gallery events, practicing English with Chinese friends or even designing the monthly programme. There is also space for private initiatives through many different kinds of volunteer work.
Culture exchange “east meets west” is the focus point of the Culture Course in China. The students will have a chance to share their own Scandinavian culture with local friends, as well as gaining a deeper understanding of Chinese customs. It is important that the students are flexible, eager to learn and have good cooperation and communication skills. Fluency in English is of course essential! The course results in a Folkhögskola diploma.
