For the past 18 months, Rebekah Nivala has had quite the adventure: teaching piano, learning Chinese and Asian culture, traveling, and making many wonderful friends all in the city of eternal spring. This summer, Rebekah will be going back to her home in Boston to begin graduate study at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. To commemorate her time in Kunming, Rebekah and several artist friends would like to present a farewell concert. Although this is a time of goodbyes, let us say 再见, full of the hope to meet again.
Aviva
Aviva Zheng, was born in Kunming in Yunnan province. She has studied dancing since 4 years old.
Graduated from Yunnan Art University and got choreography degree in 2013. She started to choreograph when she was in middle school. Had taken part in the TCG Nordica project “Apple” as a composer and a dancer. Experienced in performing with foreign artists. Now she is a professional dance teacher at TCG Nordica.
Karen Brubaker
A graduate of the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music in Illinois, USA, Karen Brubaker has been studying flute for thirteen years. Karen thoroughly enjoys performing, has won a number of competitions, and has appeared as a guest soloist with multiple orchestras. In addition to considerable performing experience, Karen specializes in early childhood music education and currently teaches early childhood group music classes and private flute lessons at YaGe Community School of the Arts here in Kunming. Through her passion for music, love for children, and fascination with cultures, Karen seeks to cultivate creativity, nurture ability, & inspire musicality wherever she goes.
Jin Xiaoyun
Jin Xiaoyun is a piano teacher living in Kunming, who was awarded as
Kunming and Yunnan Excellent Piano Teacher several times. She was invited to some countries- such as Denmark, Norway, Estonia and Sweden to perform in the past few years, and achieved a great success. She is the member of Yunnan Musician Association and got the silver prize of Four Hands Competition of the 4th KAWAI Asia Piano Competition in 2013.
Hank
Hank is in grade 7 at High School affiliated to Yunnan Normal University, has been studying the piano for 3 years, has leant from Rebekah Nivala in the past one and half year. In addition to being interested in jazz and country music, Hank also enjoys basketball, swimming, and traveling. He is excited for this concert and would like to dedicate his performance to everyone and Rebekah Nivala, and hopes that everyone will enjoy this evening!
Rebekah Nivala
A 2012 graduate of Wheaton College, Rebekah Nivala received her training
in Piano Performance under Dr. Karen Redekopp Edwards of Wheaton College Conservatory of Music, Illinois, USA and Katariina Liimatainen of JAMK University of Applied Sciences, Jyväskylä, Finland. Throughout college, she received several awards, including: the Nancy Schofield Fadely Music Scholarship (2008-2011); the Peter Boak Music Scholarship (2009); the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society Music Scholarship (2008). Having spent the past 18 months as a piano teacher at YaGe Community School of the Arts, Kunming, Rebekah will soon head back to Boston where she will begin graduate study at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
