History of the Kunming Community Theater Company
Andrew Miller, who has lived in Kunming since July 2011 and will stay for approximately 3 years, has acted in various amateur drama productions around the world, including William Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ in Hong Kong, Vietnam and Malawi, T.S Elliott’s ‘Murder in the Cathedral’, Carol Churching’s ‘Serious Money’, and Pinter’s ‘The Lover’ in Hong Kong. Andrew and Roger Greenlee, co-founder of the KCTC, felt forming a drama company would add to the community fabric of Kunming and provide an opportunity to complement existing performing arts activities in the city. They therefore decided to form the KCTC in January 2012. For the first production of KCTC, Andrew proposed ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, due mainly to his familiarity with the play, its comedic appeal and the fame of its author. Open auditions were held in February 2012 (see poster on page 2). The play was cast and rehearsals have been taking place, using an updated, modern English script and a diverse cast of Chinese and expatriate actors, since March 2012, with a view to performing the production in June 2012. Andrew is directing the play, and he plus all actors are giving their time on a voluntary basis. On Saturday May 20, 2012 Yunnan TV filmed rehearsals and footage will be shown on Yunnan TV soon.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a play by William Shakespeare. Believed to have been written between 1590 and 1596, it portrays the events surrounding the marriage of the Duke of Athens, Theseus, and the Queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta.. These include the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of 6 amateur actors, who are manipulated by the fairies who inhabit the forest in which most of the play is set. The play is one of Shakespeare’s most popular, comedy works for the stage and is widely performed across the world.
