Håvard Stubø: guitar, Steinar Nickelsen: organ, Håkon Mjåset Johansen: drums

These three musicians, all among Scandinavia’s finest young jazz artists, have played together for almost a decade. Over the course of their time together, they have developed a unique expression where ferocious energy meets intense lyricism to create pure musical joy.
While still being open to other forms of music, they share a common background in modern jazz, and through extensive touring they have developed a highly intuitive way of playing together, often leading to musical dialogues that border on the telepathic.

The result: groovy acoustic jazz with a Nordic sensibility, inspired by Eddie Harris, Wayne Shorter and Jim Hall, but also with clear references to newer Nordic/European music.

Håvard Stubø – guitar

Stubo is recognized as one of Norway´s finest jazz guitarists, and works regularly with several bands, most notably JUPITER featuring Jonas Kullhammar, Håvard Stubø Quartet, Wes!, and Jazz & Fly Fishing, Has worked with many prominent musicians such as Tomasz Stanko, Jimmy Owens and Arve Henriksen.

Steinar Nickelsen – Hammond B3

Nickelsen was voted young Norwegian Jazz Musician of the year in 2003, and has played with many leading musicians, touring with Pat Metheny. Nickelsen studied at the Music Academy in Oslo, at IACP in Paris, at the jazz department in Trondheim, church department in Trondheim, and at the soloist program at the Rhythmic Conservatory in Copenhagen. Currently lives and works in Shanghai, China and plays with many projects including the multiple-China-tour veterans Excess Luggage.

Håkon Mjåset Johansen – drums

Johansesn established himself from an early age as one of Norways most active drummers. He has won Norwegian Grammys with the bands Urban Connection and Come Shine, and has been touring and recording with artists such as Jan Garbarek, Michael Brecker, Steve Grossman, and Chick Corea. He is active in a dozen bands including Excess Luggage, Motif, Maryland and Håvard Wiik Trio.

Lucia Concert 8pm price: 10RNB
Need to reservation in advance, Tel: 4114691 4114692
ADD:TCG Nordica, XiBa Road no.101 Loft, Kunming.

Celebrate the light according to the Scandinavian Lucia tradition by attending the Annual Lucia Concert. TCG Nordica’s Scandinavian choir will sing traditional Lucia-songs from their home countries, and Christmas carols, to commemorate Saint Lucia.

On the 13th of December is Lucia day, a day of light, because you light a lot of candles. All local newspapers have a competition with 10 young girls who have their pictures in the paper. The readers vote for the candidate they want to see as Lucia, the queen of light. The girl who gets most votes is crowned Lucia at a ceremony in the market square of many towns and villages. The remaining nine contestants become the maids of Lucia. They all learn many special songs and perform in homes for old people and in halls for the staff of different private companies. Lucia wears a wreath made of lingonberry twigs with candles or electric lights in it. The maids hold a lit candle in one hand. When Lucia walks into a room she leads the party and the maids walk in procession behind her. They all sing beautiful songs and sometimes read poems. If you have children you also celebrate Lucia in your home. Some one helps the children to make coffee early in the morning of Lucia day. You put coffee-cups, luciabuns, “lussekatter” (important ingredients in “lussekatter” are saffron and raisins) and gingerbread biscuits, “pepparkakor” (important spices in these biscuits are cinnamon, ginger and clove), on a tray and bring it to your parents room and wake them up singing Lucia songs. The girls are dressed in white robes as Lucia with electric candles in a wreath on their heads or candles in one hand. The boys are also dressed in long, white shirts with a pointed hat made of paper on their heads. They are called “star-boys”.
