These eleven artists are all faithfully playing the role of “sleepers”, sharing their experiences “in hiding” with everyone. Since ancient times, artists have always been a group of active sleepers. They engage in the act of creation through games, explorations, thoughts, accumulated experiences and constantly refined language, all in hopes of making a “prison break” from reality. This process is long, arduous, dangerous and debilitating, with the only comfort coming from the breakthroughs, large or small, that are achieved through creation. The saving grace of art is that it provides these “sleepers” with the idea of a shore to rest on, so that they can imagine the possibility of redemption somewhere beyond reality. This is the enchanting thing about art: the expectations of the “sleepers”, and the great and just “conspiracy theory”.

Sleepers

Sleepers
on “Sleepers: Eleven Yunnan Artist Contemporary Artistic Experimentation” Exhibition
Luo Fei (Curator, Artistic Director at TCG Nordica)
After several changes, our eleven participating Yunnan artists finally settled on the name “Sleepers” for this exhibition. This name denotes inconspicuousness, diligence, training and experience, and it also makes the allusion that these people are under cover in a certain environment, waiting for action, which fits with the real state of mind among the artists in this exhibition. This word calls to mind two other words, “sleeper cell” and “prison break”. Read more

Norwegian artists Thea Elisabeth Haavet and Elisabeth Helvin were invited to come to TCG Nordica work as residency artists, residence time: Dec/20/2009–Jan/4/2010

Thea Elisabeth Haavet:
I am a 34 year old Norwegian journalist and filmmaker. I have a bachelor degree in comparative religion, antropology and theater/dance from Norway – and a Master of fine arts in Theater from New York. But my professional life has mostly been in the media. I have worked for many years as a journalist for newspapers and magazines – and also for TV as a writer and director. I love dancing, tango, salsa and dance impro – and just finished a documentary on tango – my favorite dance. I also like very much travelling and meeting people from different cultures. I attend Oslo International Church – which has members from most part of the world – which I enjoy very much. I believe in empowering and transforming people and societies by art – and among others I have worked with young people in South-Africa, using theater as a method.

sculpture from Elisabeth Helvin
Elisabeth Helvin:
My education is in teaching and I have worked with rehabilitation of people with drug problems and in children care before I got an invitation to move to South Africa and learn the craft of ceramic in 2001. Since 2002 I have worked as a sculptor full time, mostly here in Norway. I also work with photography, painting and drawing. You are welcome to visit my website www.elisabethhelvin.no to get a feel for what I do.
The last two years I have completed a degree in counseling. I believe that art and the creative process has a healing effect on people. I believe that one of the things we are made for is to create. So besides sculpting I work with children that has lost parents and parents that has lost children. Using art together with conversation as a tool to work trough the process of grief and to deal with the great and difficult loss this people have experienced. I find this work very meaningful – and we also experience the transformational power of the creative process.
My big fascination in life is people, I newer stop being amazed! And it keep me seeing new thing, about myself and life. I also as Thea loves to travel and see new places. Learning about different ways of living. I enjoy music and I love a good story; told through a book, on stage, screen or by the fire.

Artist Fan Li
Landscape sketch is not only a academic task in art schools, but also a live style in Yunnan artists, they recorded their daily life through this kind of art, like a log. Fan Li’s oil paintings in the exhibition all are from Kunming, Beijing’s streets, and some of them from indoor scenes. There is no academic aspiration in those landscape and scene sketches, just personally and daily life’s sketches, but testimony of artist’s real sentiment and peace.
