“Watercolor world”
the Exhibition of the Chinese artist Lin Ling and the American artist Brad Hawn

Opening: Friday 20:00, 28th Oct 2005
Exhibition time: 28th Oct – 4th Nov 2005

This was LinLings first exhibition since the 1980s.

This exhibition shows two artists who have different cultural backgrounds.
Although they live in different countries, and their painting style is different, still they have one thing in common: the interest in water color as a material, and the passion of using water color to describe this wonderful world.
Through our artists eyes, full of respect for life and love of living, and through their brushstrokes, we get a fresh view of their beautiful “water color world”.

Artist: Brad Hawn

Life’s experiences and my profession have prepared me to express myself through art. Engineering has been my profession for all of my adult life. Creating the structural system for buildings, solving problems and visualizing the end product have been the preparation for an expression through art. Many would say that the technical aspect of engineering and the expressive aspect of art are opposites; I am testimony that the thought might be wrong. Since watercolor is only so controllable. I am able to allow the medium to help me to be expressive. It is exciting to have a plan for painting and see that plan change and evolve as the painting unfolds, this allows for freshness in the piece as it evolves.

I enjoy the challenge of creating expression and personality in the piece. I use bold color and strong composition with great contrast of lights and darks to describe my painting style. I feel most comfortable close to the subject with a reflective mood in the work. I feel I have succeeded if I am able to capture the emotion of the scene. I use a direct method of applying the pigment to the paper rather than a layered approach, which enables me to thrust myself into the painting.

PROCESS 2005–SOLO exhibition of Zhang Yongzheng

Preface by Zhang Quan:

Nature endows species with abundant forms of creatures. Each individual life discloses to us the secret of Nature. Who arranges seasons, shift of day and night, sun light, rains and snows for us? And who makes dawn and dusk, rivers and forests, birth and death

During this era of airships, the exploration into individual life is still of our interest. We will not understand the universe before we can understand ourselves.

The work “Process” means, human being are a part of Nature. Through the internal spiritual activities by human being, Nature will, in different possible ways, reveal to us the secret of both our lives and the universe.
artist statement:

What I’m doing here is not for memorizing or extolling , but only for expressing. For a certain period of time. I have been curious about the changes caused by the texture of oil painting materials: smooth and rough, dry and moist, sharp and soft. This drove me to create such a series of oil paintings. While, my ideas are far beyond this . For example , the usage of red colors in the background of warm grey is different from my early Gallop. They are purer and more implicit-the numerous red flowers and the listless person with wings.
Simplicity was just what I wanted to express in this series. To refuse the profundity and the illusion brought about by so called culture was my aim here!
